I was wondering how much a core carburator is worth? Also, are they easy to overhaul? Any special equipment required? If so, how much $$ to overhaul, and who is recommended?

PLEASE DONT ATTEMPT TO REBUILD YOU OWN CARB.THERE NOT CHEAP TO O/H BUT WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!THE LAST THING ANYONE WANTS IS TRYING TO FIND A SPOT TO PUT IT DOWN WHEN YOU COULD HAVE SPENT A FEW BUCKS TO DO IT RIGHT!!IVE WORKED ON LOTS OF A/C AND YOU DONT CUT CORNERS ON ENGINES OR CARBS THE RESULTS CAN BE FATAL!!THE CARB REBUILDERS HAVE ALL THE TOOLS, PARTS, TEST EQUIPMENT AND MOST OF ALL EXPERIENCE. AN A/C IS NOT LIKE THE FAMILY SEDAN IF IT STOPS RUNNING YOU DONT JUST PULL OVER AND WAIT FOR A TOW,IT CAN BE THE MOST FRIGHTFUL AND SOMETIMES LAST EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WILL EVER HAVE!! TRY ONE OF THE MAJOR 1340 REBUILDERS AND THEY WILL GET YOU SET UP,BUT PLEASE DONT TRY THIS AT HOME THANKS MIKE

Tulsa does the engines and carbs for our T-6s. They do a very good job.
Aero did JCW's engine and carb. He had no problems with the carb but had engines issues under 100hrs which Tulsa repaired.

Your help is appreciated, but please turn off the fear button. If you read my message carefully, you'll note that I asked about required overhaul equipment. I have an I.A. who checks all my work, especially critical work.

Please let's not get emotional, I just want answers to the questions.

let me second the motion..... DANGER WILL ROBINSON.... don't try this at home... i am an A&P IA and do work on my kinner, lyc and cont carbs... they are however a far cry from the 985/1340 carbs...

jack i had Maynard and Maynard redo my carb as they are very specialized and really do a good job... as i recall it was about $650....

maynard and maynard are no longer doing carbs so your next best bet is Tulsa... i like their work and they do a good job....

you do a 1340 carb on your own and you will be courting disaster..how lucky do you feel???? a t-6 is not a sterarman and an off field adventure will hurt you.

What was the place down in Conroe, TX? I don't remember if they did
carbs but i sent Doc's Mags down there for overhaul.

I don't want to argue with you guys

However, I don't think you should dictate to me what is safe and what isn't. I know with the correct procedures and equipment any measure of desired safety can and will be achieved no matter how critical.

Fear does not solve problems, knowledge and ingenuity solve problems.
If you tell me not to do something, you'd better give me a better explanation than DO NOT OR ELSE.

Ah, so that's why your so blissful..

Procedures and equiptment are fine. But you left out knowledge and experence. If you have neither listen to Mike and Jeff. Their advice will save you from busting your ass. Don't let your ego get in the way and confuse sound advice with dictating.

Find a more reasonable explanation other than DO NOT OR DIE.

Knowledge is available, experience is available, and procedures are available. If you're so concerned about me then give me $1000 for Christmas.

Every resource such as knowledge, procedures, experience and equipment are all available. This is not my ego speaking, but it seems there are a great bunch of egos saying "do it and die". I think one of my flight instructors said that, and he was a pretty crusty guy. I'm also still flying. Let's move on, and take fear out of the equation.

Maybe you naysayers can't do it yourself, so you tell everyone else they can't do it. That means you don't know. So if you don't know, then keep quiet.

And again, if you care so much about me, then send me $1000 dollars for Christmas. And if you care so much, why don't you sell your warbirds and give the proceeds to the starving in Africa.
