From time to time, the spouse of my late friend Dick Kamm sends me additional photos that she finds around the house. I just received a batch of prints and negatives and thought that some would be of interest to the community.

The following are scans of the prints. Lacking the original slide or neg for these pics, I'm not 100% certain that all of them were taken by Dick, although I'm pretty sure about the F-80 and F-84 ones. If anyone has seen any of these photos before, I'd appreciate hearing.

F-80 45-8498 of the 36th FG, probably Furstenfeldbruck, Germany.

36th FG F-80s arranged for some unknown occasion. This is a small and not very sharp print but there are at least 59 F-80s in it.

Skyblazers F-84 49-2249.

Cosmic Wind N21C "Minnow" shares the ramp with Skyblazers F-84s 49-2236 and 49-2142. An odd pic because the 84s were stationed in Germany and I was not aware "Minnow" ever went there.

Edo XTE-1 (sometimes called XS2E-1) BuNo 75213, place and date unknown. Baugher's page cites this as never having been accepted by the Navy. Of note is the absence of blue surround on national insignia.

Edo XOSE-2 (also sometimes called XS2E-1) BuNo 75214, again place and date unknown. Again, no surround on insignia. In the background are three Kingfishers, two Hellcats, three Bearcats and an Avenger. No pics of those, sorry!

Why are the F-80's on the ship all black? Is this some sort of paint or coating put on for the trip over?


The T-6 is a wonderful looking mod! Kinda looks like a ME-109 canopy.

Hi August--

Terrific stuff, keep them coming! Don't think I ever knew Edo had built an entire airplane to go atop their floats...

Re the Cosmic Wind/F-84 ramp shot, I've peered at it intently, and I think Mr Kamm may have "punked" you. The pic was taken from a very low angle (note the blurred verge of rough pavement in the immediate foreground); even so, there's quite a bit of apparent distance between the shadow under "Minnow" and those under the pair of 84s. Besides that, there seems to be a cylindrical object jutting up from the cowling of "Minnow" that looks suspiciously like the Cox .049 one-banger in my old control-line models...I'm thinking this Cosmic Wind that made it to Europe may have been a bit smaller than the ones that ran at Cleveland! (If this is a model, it ain't Cox or anything of that ilk, though: the airframe looks very substantial and well-detailed. Maybe someone was trying to mimic a ramp scene at Cleveland '49, with Goodyear Trophy and J-Division Thompson competitors parked in proximity...?)

I've never heard of the "Cosmic Wind", but the civvie plane on the left is a model - stood out instantly. I'm just too used to judging relative tones and other size/distance perspective giveaways. It's hard to discern positively, but that giant 1-cylinder engine brought the "case closed" hammer down.

Naw, that "square" Texan canopy is just the normal frame with the curved portions removed, presumably to reduce frontal area (but not streamlining the airframe more, for sure). It does have a Messerschmitt look to it, though. Course there's reason for such a resemblance to exist between BFW and NAA products, since at least one of the designers (Mr Schmued IIRC) had worked with Messerschmitt before joining NAA...For comparison of canopy design, here's Ed Russell's Me109E at Mt.Hope a couple weekends ago:

The polished metal number 28 appears to be a highly modified Curtiss SNC-1 Falcon.

Not a Cox .049 Jack..tho the year the photo was taken, 1950 or '51..it would be possible it could
be an earliest Cox. This motor is has a longer stroke than the compact Cox. Using the thrust-line from the center of
the spinner..too much of the cylinder portrudes above the cowl, and it's too "fat"..maybe a .19 or larger. I won't
venture a guess as to manufacturer..tho possible it could be German.

I'm amazed that one of the earliest manufacturing success stories recovering from the war were model
aircraft engines. The Germans had theirs in the late 40's, early 50's..the Japanese the same time as well. The
Japanese O.S. motors first being marketed in the U.S. as early as 1950.

"King George V docks Glasgow 8 Aug 1948. F/P-80s are unloaded from the USS Sicily (CVE-118). The 36th FG consisted of three fighter squadrons, the 22nd, 23rd and 53rd plus the normal support squadrons. The 22nd FS aircraft was the P/F-80Bs. 69 of the aircraft had been loaded as deck cargo on a small escort carrier, the USS Sicily for transport from Panama to Glasgow, flown from Scotland to Furstenfeldbruk Germany, to support Berlin Airlift. Low altitude oblique aerial photo by A-26 of the 45th Reconnaissance Squadron."
