Years ago I saw a training film done in about 1950 concerning starting a B-47, done by the Air Force it featured chiseled featured 'John Neversweat' as the all knowing Colonel giving the briefing room advisory. During the filming inside the cockpit we see the pilot furiously pumping the fuel control lever to get the engine started and then switches to outside where we see several ground crew types with carbon tetrachloridepump type extinguishers putting out the concrete ramp that is covered in small, smokey JP 2 fires from the startup.

I always enjoy watching the JATO scene in Strategic Air Command

Pop's last years in the AF were as AC in SAC on these beauties. Chennault AFB and Forbes AFB were our last two stops.

Let me tell you that as a kid, that was one heck of a show!

On a sadder note, one day at Chennault, our neighbor, a navigator on another crew, was inside the aircraft, the pilot was climbing the ladder up to the cockpit, the co-pilot finsihing the walk around when the JATO's ignited. The pilot and co-pilot killed and I think one ground crew. "Uncle Jim", still inside rode it off the end of the ramp and was rescued although burned horribly over most of his body.

After recovering, although looking grotesque, he had a sharp wit and sense of humor.

Steve,
My Dad was a B47 AC at North Little Rock and then Reynoldsberg, OH.

He talked about another crew's JATO launch where one of the bottles "left" the aircraft during a take-off and it was a death sentence for the crew.

Keep the Show on the Road!
