I find it kind of interesting that the F2G models (some of them anyway) had bubble canopies and the post war -5, -7, and AU-1's retained the original setup (modified somewhat).

Really only the only fighter that I can think of that didn't convert to the bubble style after it was prototyped.

Wonder why?

I've never been able to get a definative answer...why is one prop blade on #57 painted white?

If I remember the story right they had to get the prop dressed or something along those lines and when it was returned to the it was painted white so they left it that way. AOPA magazine had a great article on the owner of a super corsair painted just like that.

my best friend played on 57 while it languished at cleland's airport right next to my buddy's dad's golf course in solon ohio. cleland bellied in a pby catalina on the golf course, needless to say no love was lost after that between the 2 old men. i met him in 2003 at the corsair gathing in mt. comfort indiana. got an autograph i'll always cherish!!

The FG-1D is of course the one which crashed at the 1965 Lancaster, CA air races (where the photo is shot) killing pilot Lynn Whinney.

all F2G Corsair had bubble canopies. The only Corsair I remember with a modied canopy for racing was the Super Corsair.

my buddy which i mentioned earlier in this thread retains the original air scoop configuration plans for 57. oddegaard's is NOT CORRECT.

I have read in several articles about Race 57 that Mr Oddegaard installed the scoop he has from a function / ease of maintainance standpoint. The entire cowling is slightly "wrong" compared to the original.

I'm not picking a forum fight with a fellow Ohioan Tom, but you should think about Giving Bob's last name a capital O (as well as spell it correctly), rather than capitalizing the "not correct". I personally don't think there is any merit to correctness, since the engineers back in the day were trying multiple sorts of induction cowlings, mostly without success from what I've read. Anyhow, maybe Mr. Odegaard got it "right" after all!
