Is there any collective experience on the board regarding this method of ownership? If you want to respond off list, PM me. I'd be interested to hear about the experiences.

I would expect that the EXACT mix of people would have to be in the formula, especially in regards to maintenance, improvements, and flying currency. Can this be done?

Forgotten Field,

This type of ownership (shares) is quite common in Europe, it started a long time ago with General Aviation (spam cans) mainly due to the high cost of aviation in Europe, it was/is a quick and cheap way for a new pilot to get hours in, without having to actually buy a complete a/c.

The advantages are all cost of ownership are defreyed over a group of people, so that actual costs are reduced for the individual.

The disadvantages are that you might not always get the slot you want, especially during the holiday periods, and remember weather in Europe is not always ideal flying weather, so you pays your money and takes your chances.

Overall it is generally a good idea, if you are with the right people and the terms of ownership/use are spelled out in such a way that nobody misunderstands their status it is a great way to fly, especially if you are personally limited to a few hours per month/year, due to other commitments.

Most times these groups are set up as Limited Liability Companies, and each of the part owners have the same number of shares, so there is no single person in the group who ownes more than the others.

But at the end of the day, the only way it works is with like-minded people in the group working together, otherwise it can be a shambles.

So it can be good, but it can also be bad.

Hope this helps

Stuart

In case anyone's wondering, the location of that Pembroke in Washington State is pronounced "Pyoo-all-up." I have seen that name bastardized a hunderd different ways before :)

Interesting, I lived in the Puget Sound area for 22 years, and flew all over the place in my dad's Navion. Never once do I recall seeing that airplane at Puyallup. I wonder where it's been, or if it's been out behind a hangar or something all those years?

Randy,

It was sitting out beside a hanger when I saw it two or three years ago. I can't remember what the name of that road is that runs past the airport, but it seems like you went to the South(?) end of the field and turned left. I can't remember exactly, but it could be seen from the road without too much trouble. It didn't look to be in very good shape though.

When I first moved out there, I had all manner of trouble learning to pronounce Puyallup.

That reminds me, in the late 70s there was a Pembroke at Van Nuys, I beieve it was being used by a California University for Marine Research. Wonder if it's the same plane?

Apparently this form of ownership is not unknown in the States:
