The RAAF operated several ex-Dutch Netherlands East Indies Dornier Do 24s after the Japanese overran Java, for a period, the Dornier thus becoming one of the exclusive types to have fought on both sides of the war.
This ex-Spanish example, loaned by the RAF Museum to the Dutch Air Forces Museum, is configured and painted as one of these aircraft, 'The Old Soldier' used for runs back to Java from Australia by the Dutch crew.
The only airworthy example is the Dornier Do24ATT with a new Dornier wing, turboprops and gear. (I wonder oif any other flying boat has been made into an amphibian 30 odd years after its first flight?) Owned and operated by Iren Dornier, Claude Dorniers' grandson, it's flown around the world, and was flown at Oshkosh by some Indiana chap.
One of the oddest things I've done is stand on a Dornier talking to Mr Dornier at Biggin Hill while Spitfires and Hurricanes taxi past...
