Great picture!!!!
It's one for the makings experts to conjecture over. The differences between the star and bars on the wing with, what appear to be a red surround (long after the red was removed from other US aircraft) vs. the dark blue star and bars on the fuselage with either a very faded out older blue meatball showing around the edges, or an over painted red outline-and the incredable amount of wear and weathering, really captures the moment THANKS

Both insignia appeart to have a red outline to me. The wing is ligher, being in direct sunlight. You're right, though..the red should have been long gone by 1944, especially in the Pacific. Many SoPac aircraft just added the white bars with no outline in '43. ANY red on the insignia was considered likely to draw fire.

Looks like she's got a replacement all-blue cowl. Does anyone know how often that tape over the fuel tank was replaced? Was it actually adhesive tape, or fabric rib tape held in place with dope?

Jack,
That's not a recovery.
It's a bunch of pole dancers getting ready to lift their latest victim onto a pylon, That way, that can honor the men who flew them by eventually letting it rot and fall off the pole!

I see that it's most definately a County job- three guys working (one not so much) and thirteen yahoos standing around discussing how they would do it......plus the perimeter guard past the left wing tip

GREAT PHOTO!

I agree, the outline is red, just on different shades of blue and so it looks like it is a different shade.
