It's a picture of the B-24/17 combo. There was another thread on it, but I can't find it with a quick search.

I was looking at it from the opposite point-of-view! The critique of the airplane was that the nose compartment was much improved from the standard B-24H/J, but the flight caracteristics were far from desirable. There was also a B-17E that had Consolidated tail turrets grafted onto it fore-and-aft that was tested in England. It's just about as ugly as this thing, but there was some interest in it.

According to William N. Hess' "Big Bombers of WWII", the graft was an attempt to test the B-17 chin turret in place of the regular turret in order to free up some room in the cramped nose. Apparently operational performance was quite poor, and the idea was tossed after 5 test flights. They did like the working room in the nose, however. (P-216/217)

Ever since this subject came up last year,I've been looking for these pictures.I finally found them in "The B-17 Flying Fortress Story" by Roger A. Freeman and David Osborne. This is listed as the B-17E returned from the Reed Project. The Radio Room guns are twin 50's in a hydraulic mount. The nose and tail turrets are from a B-24.The bombardier position is under the nose. The bombay doors were modified as an attempt to hide from fighters when the doors were open.Needless to say, this was the sole example.
