Boeing has announced that the last heritage Douglas built commercial aircraft, the 717, will be terminated due to a lack of orders. They anticipate that production will cease in May of 2006. It may extend a bit more from that if some options are exercised, but they will no longer offer it for sale. This unfortunately is not much of a surprise.

The 717 doesn't have the range to compete with the 737, nor is it efficient enough on the routes served by the newer regional jets. That and the airlines don't have the money right now.

This leaves the C-17 and some product support groups for the older commercial aircraft remaining.

It looks like a smaller MD-80. Competition is cut-throat.

oh well!! i think a couple billion dollar loss won't hurt that airplane building giant in the long run!!

It seems that is also the end of for a place where warbirds were built. Wings of the 717 are built in Toronto, on the site of AVRO Canada, previously Victory aircraft. The birth place of canadian built Lancaster, CF-100 and CF-105.
