Hi All
On this page in the link below , Top photo between the JU-52's, Is a tail which is puzzling me.
It's not JU-88, not He-70 , not ME 210/410, not mosquito,
Anyone any ideas , some tails are close, but little bits are different.
It's bugging me , I can't identify it , and it is going to ruin my weekend .
Might be a captured a/c, appears to have a yellow tail & undersurfaces.
Only thing I found real close was, a Japanese floatplane but what would one be doing in europe.

Hi,
I thought that as well at first,
but the rudder outline is all wrong and the fuselage seems to be squarish not roundish like a HE-III.
It's bugging me not in any of my books ...

Sorry..don't think it's an Arado or an early He-111. The trailing edge of
the rudder appears to curve all the way down to the tailcone. Even an
early He-111 doesn't do that. The "light color" of the bird, suggests to me
an early machine..but no "red band" behind the swastika.

Willy may be closest to correct...an early "single finned" Siebel. I must go
look at "el booko obscuro"...

many thanks , solved by the hyperscale board , it is a Latecoere 298, but why it was there will probably be never know.

Never Know?? Well that is possibly true..but there are still clues to be gleaned from the evidence, me thinks....

A "Ju-52 guy", maybe could give a clue, as to the "age"of the "Latecore's"
hanger partners. Is the "light gray" color, a signifier of an "interned" or
"evaluation after occupation", 298 ??

In the foreground Ju-52..looking thru the window..we can see the "cross"
on the side of the fuse of the 298. Aft of the window..looking thru the door,
1/2 way down..are we looking at the inboard side of the starboard float?
At first, I thought that area may be the lowered flaps..but there is no equi-spaced ribbing..so I'm back to thinking a float! The Latecore empennage
sits rather far aft of the floats..so still, I think floats...

Or, am I totally wrong...& I'm looking at "shop stuff"? And the 298
is up on some sort of Jigs like the Ju-52's?

Where did you see what you termed the "orange area"? Was it on the port
side farthest aft? I was thinking it was a "shadow area of the port elevator
in the "down" position. The starboard elevator "in the down position" is quite light!

Regardless, brewerjerry...it's a very interesting photo!!!

Didn't the Luftwaffe used to paint captured aircraft tail surfaces in high-viz yellow?

Sorry Tony..no P-38..hinge-point is all wrong. What you are thinking as the
under-part of the "38 rudder, is actually the port elevator. I'm pretty
convinced this is a Latecoere 298. We are looking at the stern with about
10-20 degrees starboard angle on the bow..in Navy terms. Also, if it was
a -38 the boom it would be too "fat".

As for yellow paint capture/aggressor identifiers..true, but some were and
some..at least eventually weren't. I think the more distinctly identifiable
as Allied..the more likely the yellow...at least in some point of their eval.
or use. In the next link is a Curtis Hawk 75-A in a grey....under that is
a P-38 with underside yellow..also a good time to look at the hinge and
shape of the rudder.... Several variant paint schemes here......

In the meantime, I have done some digging on Latecoere. There was part
of the airfield at Toulouse-blagnac where Junkers had hangars in the old
Dewoitine plant. St. Martin-de-Touch..occupation-times. I'm still looking
..Latecoere had several plants and bases in So. France as part of the
Airline/Seaplane operation as well. Lotsa history..and I don't read French
too well!!

Hey SwissM!..yeah the hyperscale guys found it in an old Greens. But I
have been curious...and am digging about for the "hangar background"
and Junkers repair stations in France. If I get something "stupendous" in
French for translation...I'll give you a "holler". Otherwise, I doubt you'd
be willing to "sit over my shoulder" when I surf this stuff!! Part of the
fun is in the digging!
