WHERE did you get that picture??? Looks like 45th FS to me and I'm ALWAYS interested in P-51 pictures from there.
Would it be possible to get a higher resolution of that? I'm particularly interested with matching tail numbers to squadron codes - like a/c 60 being 463428.

Scanned it at the National Archives, it was in the Marine Corps Collection.

I wonder if there are more 45th FS aircraft in there... Any chance you can read the squadron codes in the higher res version?

I guess no one here realizes that 3 guys didn't make it out of that B-29, so you may want to take that into consideration before making jokes...

if i had known that before i obviously wouldnt have posted

How did the Mustang end up in that position? Seems like in the pic there isn't enough damage to be from some kind of ground loop.

I think it goes without saying that had we known of fatalities, the humorous remarks wouldn't have appeared. We, however, didn't.
Not
all of us know the entire history of every airplane we see here.
I suppose that if someone finds that there was a fatality concerning the Mustangs in the original posting, we'll be chastised for the remarks that followed that, also.

The back of the photo says, "Fire fighters extinguish burning Mustang on Airfield #1".
What squadron codes are you referring too? There are only the numbers on the side of each aircraft.
Any nose art is blurred, even in high rez.
No other pics in the box I found this one in. Just dumb luck that a Marine photog took the pic.

Mike
