P-51D "Lou IV"

Wed Feb 25, 2009 4:36 am

Does anyone have a photo of P-51D 44-63350 "Lou IV" after its crash at Camarillo, CA in 2007? Also, is there a restoration update on it or a recent photo showing any progress from the new owner in Saskatchewan, Canada? Just was wondering since I was familiar with the aircraft when it was in Fort Wayne, IN in the mid 80's. Thanks.

Dick Phillips sent this to me and asked for me to post it for him.

Looks pretty tore up. Was the cause asymmetric flap deployment?

in this case its lots better to not ask..

Correct me if I'm wrong but their were 2 like painted P-51D Lou IVs at Fort Wayne at that time. Brian Reynolds owns the other now in the same paint but renamed America Beauty.

Cause of the accident was a low speed + full power go around, resulting in loss of control and roll over of the aircraft.

Inexperiance, torque rolled on a go around attempt.

There were two Lou IV's in Fort Wayne, but at different times. John Dilley/Tom Kelley had the first one, and then they restored the second one. They sold the first to Fort Wayne resident Dean Cutshall who renamed it Cutters Capers. That is the one that Reynolds has now. One of the guys on here that is a Mustang expert can sort out the serial numbers and registrations for you :D

Thanks for the picture. It shows the extent of the damage and the work that will be required to bring her back once again. Does anyone have a picture of it now in Canada showing current restoration work? This is the 4 th time this aircraft has been heavily damaged since its sale in Fort Wayne some +/-20 years ago. #1- Torque Roll on takeoff imediately following sale resulting in heavy damage to left wing and prop. #2- Landed Short of runway in Dover DE. resulting in wings being bent up to Corsair configuration. #3- Fuel Starvation over IL. countryside resulting in almost total destruction, then rebuild by Beck/Tri State. #4 - Torque roll on go around resulting in tragic loss of McKittrick. Let's all hope for for a better future for "Lou IV" Thanks

I flew the aircraft after repairs from #3 where TriState did the work. The aircraft flew very straight. Kudos to those involved on the repair.
