Supermarine Spitfire I X4276

I saw that The Real Aeroplane Company, in Breighton, has bought the remains of Supermarine Spitfire I X4276 for eventual restoration... to flight status I assume. Does anyone know the history of this airframe, or what the remains consist of... I assume it is a well pulverized wreck, but would be happy to be convinced otherwise.

This aircraft was lost in a mid-air collision with another aircraft from the same squadron whilst flying from Catterick, IIRC, whilst being flown by Al Deere. Both pilots survived.

I've not seen any pictures of the excavated remains, but it is probably fair to surmise that few, if any, usable parts remain and that this will effectively be yet another new-build Spitfire.

Sounds ominously familiar... however, Mk1 spits are extraordinarily rare in the air, so it would make a welcome addition to the airshow circuit. I wonder whether the data plate is being combined with more substantial wreckage from a lesser known aircraft... Al Deere's historical connection will make it quite a marketable commodity.

I can only think of one, and I am not even sure if that project has started yet.

As in Blue Peter at the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum ?? , seen her a few times and it's doesn't look like a new build to me ?? , they have the remains of two Spitfires , Blue Peter and the Loch Doon Spitfire - only one is on display - the other under restoration offsite .

Sorry Peter.... I wasn't referring to just spitfires, but warbirds in general... sorry to give the wrong impression. There are a number of aircraft out there which have been built around a data plate, and it looks like this one is going to be the same, unless someone can show the wreckage the aircraft is going to be resurrected from.

I think you will find it is NOT there anymore.. The rumour is this is the 'identity not revealed' one under rebuild in the Midlands.. Methinks at Tollerton
