The plane used to chase Cary Grant through a cornfield is up for sale.
The site on Trade a Plane lists it as....
"MOVIE AIRPLANE- Navy N3N-- "North By Northwest" Alfred Hitchcook, Gary Grant. Restored to original Coast Guard colors. Approx 300 hours since restoration, 450 HP, Garmin 250XL GPS, Com, TXP (enc), intercom. Outstanding condition. $95,000. "

I'm not sure if there is any proof to the claim, if it is the plane it's pretty neat.
Does anyone know how the explosion scene was done...a model I'm guessing...and was it a real plane burning seen in the closeup?

BTW: In a later scene the bad guys are about to board a pretty neat looking Lockheed Lodestar...anyone have photos or ID?

Wow, has it really been that long since I last visited?

Could be the right one - it's got the correct reg N45091. They used a combination of this plane for the flying, a miniature Stearman for the crash into the tanker truck, and a PT-19 fuselage for the full size fire shots, according to the production stills.

Great info...do you have any more info on the planes in the picture?
(the N3N and Lockheed Lodestar).

BTW: great airport shots of NWA DC-7s, and Stratocruisers...and if I remember correclty, a TWA Connie.)

The red-and-white Lodestar only appears clearly in two shots as James Mason and Eva Marie Saint are about to board; maybe check the DVD on still search but I couldn't see an N-number when I saw it on TCM a couple weeks ago. There's a nice shot of a TWA Connie behind Cary Grant and Leo G. Carroll at Midway Airport, again not clear enough for a registration... BTW the N3N scenes were shot near Bakersfield, not Indiana - several of Charlie Nichols' ex-dusters are in the same N-number block.

Reviving an old thread...

I just watched the movie with my son (he has suddenly discovered that he likes Hitchcock at age 17 ?? ) and the Lodestar is shown in a still shot during the "Making of" short on the DVD. It shows to be N30F which Baugher's site shows as 42-56019

(c/n 18-2492) to RAF as FS738 but NTU, later changed to RR998.
To BOAC as G-AGII. Registration cancelled
Aug 1944, and to Norwegian AF as 2492/T-AD Jul 1945.
Later went to Aero Nordas SE-BTI, then to Firestone
Tire Co as N30F
