Folks,

In addition to the Catalina Main Leg Beaching Gear Unit from Baltimore, Curtiss Bay Maryland to Soap Lake/Seattle Washington State listed in an earlier WIX post at

I also now have a need to move a second Main leg (this one with no wheels/tyres but similar to the photo in the post linked above) and tail unit Beaching Gear from Midland Texas to Soap Lake/Seattle Washington State

As per the other Unit, these are currently not crated and I am interested in doing this as cheaply as possible as its for a not for profit museum restoration in Australia who have a container load of PBY parts departing from Soap Lake in the next few months.


Any leads on museum friendly truckers with backloading space from Texas to Seattle, or low cost trips in stages to get there would be greatly appreciated.

Its eventual home is here: http://aarg.com.au/Catalina.htm which is an original RAAF wartime Black Cat in pure flying boat configuration.

It is one of 29 PBY-5A amphibians modified in the field by the RAAF to PBY-5A(M) flying boat status to remove the excess weight of undercarriage etc to improve range and payload, and used in a number of operational missions to mine Japanese ports and shipping lanes including the mining of Manila Harbour to bottle up the Japanese fleet prior to General MacArthur's return to the Phillipines.


Any assistance with this "Texas to Seattle" or the "Maryland to Seattle" transport of parts would be greatly appreciated.

I hope to have some dimensions and weights early next week

Someone suggested a "Pony Express" might be worth exploring, if there are Wixers who could move the parts across a few state lines at a time? Anyone travel between Texas and Wyoming etc? on a regular basis?

These parts are a "pickup" from Gary at Midland so the first "rider" in the express gets to see Austin Lake and the Austin Collection smiles.

I can get this from Gary's house to Idaho in the next week and a half or so. My brother is here on leave and will be driving back to Mountain Home, Idaho around the 5th or so. Gary is only about 45minutes from us now.

Might be a good idea to post dimensions and approx weight so people have an idea of just how big and heavy these "bits" are.

I'm working on getting the dimensions for y'all. I've been under the weather all weekend and hope to be able to stand up and get out to the barn tomorrow to measure the beaching gear.

I'll post more when able.

Hey Mark,
The company I'm currently leased on with are being some real jerks about me moving aircraft parts around the country, so I've bought me a little 3/4 ton diesel and have borrowed a 30' gooseneck to move stuff around....
If there is anyway to get the parts to the midwest area from the East coast..I should be taking an engine from east Tx to the Salt Lake City, Ut area...Just moved my PV-2 wings from N. Wyoming to Missouri last week....I have to go back and get the nose section and rear fuselage soon.
Check in with me as there is always something going on ...in fact, I am supposed to be pulling some jet stuff from Seattle area sometime soon....It's always hurry up and wait!

The dimensions and weights on the beaching gear are as follows......

Tail gear.....30" wide, 38" tall, 35 pounds, including the axles, which were removed for those measurements and can be packed seperately.

Main gear......28" wide, 55" tall, 100 pounds.

The weights are "guesstimates."

Isn't there a website/discussion list here in the US where truckers post their routes of travel when they are empty to pick up extra loads? I've seen it before, but can't recall the name or find the URL. I'd like to bookmark it again if someone can find it.
