What is the difference between a B29 and a B50?

Mon May 25, 2009 11:32 pm

Larger engines
Redesigned engine nacelles and engine mounts
Enlarged vertical tail and rudder (to maintain adequate yaw control during engine-out conditions)
Reinforced wing structure (required due to increased engine mass, larger gyroscopic forces from larger propeller, greater fuel load, and revised landing gear loading)
Revised routing for engine gases (cooling, intake, exhaust and intercooler ducts; also oil lines)
Upgraded fire-control equipment (to control remote turrets)
Landing gear strengthening (takeoff weight increased from 133,500 lb/60,555 kg to 173,000 lb/78,471 kg)
Increased fuel capacity (this was largely addressed by adding underwing fuel tanks).
Revisions to flight control systems
Different alloy of aluminum

Isn't it suppose to be moved to Dover AFB?

That is the rumor I heard...

The B-29 used 2024-T3 aluminum, while the B-50 and C-97 used 7075-T6 aluminum which is stronger. The wings and landing gear were also interchangable with the C-97A.

I might have passed on some bad info....I stand to be corrected...what engines did the B-29 and the B-50 use?

The B-29 used the Wright R-3350
the B-50 used the Pratt & Whitney R-4360

The McDill B-50 is indeed headed to Dover, and may already be there.

Cheers,

And new funky bombardier's glass nose...

Tue May 26, 2009 6:12 pm

The B-50 also had nose wheel steering added.

I'm heading for Dover in the morning for the NASCAR races. We will be staying on the base and will check to see if the B-50 is there.

As in the current "last operational USAF B-29 flight" thread, when was the last operational B-50 flight?
