We haven't had a quiz here for a while. This should be an easy one.

Name the place and time. Name the airplane in the foreground.

Bonus points if you can tell us what the airplane's informal nickname was at the time and the reason for the name...

Has to be @ Mojave since that's about the only place in the last 40 years you could see two C-133's on the same piece of cement

That's kind of a trick question, Neal. The location is the California National Air Races at Mojave. The plane is Jack Hovey's "Hovey Mustang", Race 2, N580. But it could be one of two years.

If it's 1978, then its actually 'racing' that year, being flown by Bob Love.

If it's 1979, then it's just on static display because Jack was twisting wrenches for John Crocker's "Sumthin' Else".

And I know the answer to the 'informal' nickname...but will at least leave that to someone else. The hint is it has to do with something that 'looks out of place' on that particular Mustang.

Well, I would have blown that one. My guess would have been Tire Iron Racing's HABU.

Great pic, Neal.

Here's the thing that as I get older I start appreciating about guys like you and Bucky and the other Reno old-timers...you take pictures of the 'little stuff', the things that most people just don't even know to look for...and the perfect things for bringing up trivia like this 30 years later!

So thanks!

Brad
