I had occasion to be in Albuquerque, NM today so I took a really fast run past the National Atomic Museum. I didn't go inside and the area with the outside displays wasn't open to the public yet so I had to take these through the fence.

Great shots, thanks for sharing. I love this pic of the B-52 wing; the tail of the B-29 in the b/g made me think it was a YB-49 for half a second...

cheers

So where did the B-29 spring from? They still have a secret stash, kept in mint condition in a hidden bunker on Tinian or Saipan, or what?

From my B-29 survivors list:

45-21748 B-29-97-BW DUKE OF ALBUQUEQUE (name does not appear on the aircraft). National Atomic Museum, New Mexico. Name not original to the aircraft. Briefly served with the 509th from Dec 1946 to Aug 1947. Used as a ground training aircraft at Chanute AFB, Illinois. Eventually put on display as Enola Gay. Aircraft was disassembled and moved to the NAM (Kirtland AFB) when Chanute closed in August 1993. Aircraft is on outdoor display and in poor condition. Entire plane is painted gray. Aircraft recently transferred to the new museum site off-base and partially assembled.

if in vegas screw the poker tables & sluts, er... i mean slots , & check out the atomic history museum off the main drag from the casinos. that museum is as comprehensive as it gets. well laid out, it has alot of minute details & aspects of the world's nuclear programs in the cold war. allow at least 3 hours to absorb the place!! no warbirds present but well worth the time!!

That's not the first time somebody has posted photos of a partially disassembled large aircraft in the desert. It amazes me that they must never have any wind at all - the wings never looked any more secured than simply balancing on a couple of jacks!

That B-52 is 52-0013. It has been at the Atomic Museum for a long time.

It was the airplane that made the first H-bomb air drop - Shot Cherokee. May 1956

Why is the B-52 apart?

It was taken apart for the move from Kirtland AFB. It was in pieces when I saw it in April, thought it would be back together by now.

(Nothing like a little shameless self promotion!)
