Couldn't help but think of the helicopter scene in "Full Metal Jacket", looking at this one.

Allouette III

Portuguese gunships were based on the Allouette III, using a Mauser cannon and known as "bad wolves". Sorry to sidetrack the post but thought it appropriate... (well, darn, a bit of non-us content could be of interest no? and this reeks of Apocalypse Now)

Didn't Portugal "get some" A-26 Invaders in the 1960s and if memory serves didn't they also try to get some F7F Tigercats? I am certain that at least a few of the Invaders were delivered. I have a vague memory of the Tigercats being siezed and stored by a US government entity.

Thats a real contrived story. Best reference is "Foreign Invaders" by Dan Hagerdorn. They were smuggled to Portugal and the pilot caught during the last flight by US Customs. They served in Angola and there one fuselage and wings at the Museu do Ar depot. There is a strong chance that the B26 present in Havana was one of the portuguese ones. Never heard of the tigercat story...
