Real Hangar Flying

Over the years, I have heard about guys flying an airplane through one end of a hangar and out the other.

I imagine someone has actually done it (I don't intend to do it myself).

Does anybody know of an instance of a pilot flying an airplane through the open doors of a large hangar? Here in the states or overseas? Does anybody know of an instance when a pilot screwed up this maneuver? I have seen a photo of an airplane flying through an arch near Moab, Utah; not the same thing but about the same size opening.

Any information is appreciated.

Frank Tallman and Paul Mantz flew through many hangars and it's all on flim.
"Tt's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (Twin Beech) and
"Wings of Eagles" (Standard J-1 on floats) are the two that come to mind right off the bat.

One of the most famous "hangar fly-throughs" is in the James Bond movie - "Octopussy". In the scene, "Corkey" Fornof (who has one of the more entertaining airshow performances going right now) flies a BD-5J "Microjet" through a hangar while being chased by a missile. The missile blows up in the hangar and "007" safely evades the danger flying out the hangar as it explodes. Interestingly, this scene was inspired because the Producers of the "007" movies saw him doing the same for a Toshiba commercial and thought it'd look cool in a Bond movie.

There's an Air & Space Magazine article about the "best" Bond airplanes. In it it says that for the Bond shoot they opened all the windows and opened the doors as wide as possible. He then calculated that he couldn't do more than 180MPH going through or the pressure wave as he entered would have caused him to bounce off the floor or ceiling of the hangar. If you look at the Toshiba commercial (shown in the video), you'll see there's not much room even for an airplane as small as the BD-5J.

True, but the plane didn't actually fly through the hangar. They had a non-flying BD-5J mounted on a convertible with a pole. If you watch closely, as it "flies' through the hangar, you can see the pole .
They tried to disguise it by placing lots of objects in the foreground. It also allowed them to put Roger Moore ini the cockpit for those shots.
It worked well though.
I also liked the fight on the outside of the C-45!

You sure Jerry? I thought I read a write up detailing Corkey's experience pulling off that stunt. I agree they had to do something different to get decent "inside the hangar" footage (with an obviously slower moving subject aircraft!), but the exterior shot of the full speed flight through the open hangar doors was the real deal I believe.

This thread remindes me of the film "Piece of Cake" When they flew a spitfire thru a bridge. Does anyone know who did that ??

Swede Ralston one was cool Dude. Helluva good pilot and a nice guy.
Has I recall he started a roll just after the photo was taken!!

Paul Mantz was supposedly the first to fly through a Hangar in a Steaman C-3 for "Air Mail" in 1932.

Ray Hanna did the Spitfire under the bridge for "Piece of Cake"

And I believe Derek Piggot did the Fokker Triplane under the bridge for "The Blue Max"

I'm pretty sure, but they could've just shot the entering and exiting with the BD-5J. It looks "edited" as it pops out so I'm not sure what to make of that. I do know the interior scenes were done with the car/BD-5J set up.

Also, in the TV movie, "Pancho Barnes", with Valerie Bertinelli, they fly a Stamp through a hangar that they built just for the film in Texas.

Charles Godefroy Flies Through the Arc de Triomphe
In 1919 Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through the Arc de Triomphe to
mark the end of and honour those who fought in World War I.
I recall that a guy did the same thing in a Cessna the early 80's I believe

I have no idea where you got THIS incorrect information but I can ASSURE you Corkey Fornof flew a BD5J through the hangar for the Bond movie!
