Airmanual's intriguing pictures of Pacific scrapyards made me think to pass on something I find fascinating: seeing the bases today from wikimapia satellite views. These bases are still very recognizable, yet remote from any population in many cases. A few I've looked up are Turtle Bay, Angaur, Espiritu Santo, Vella Lavella, Morotai, Torokina (I believe this is where Pappy took off on his last mission), and Piva (just north of Torokina). Sometimes you can locate other bases nearby, such as a large bomber base south of Turtle Bay. And can't help but wonder what might be left at these remote places.

Quite a link to Morotai, airmanual. Thanks for that. Wish I could read Japanese.

Some of the satellite images are pretty bad, especially, for some reason, alot of the New Guinea bases, but others, like Vella Lavella and Talasea, are really excellent, and remains clear when you zoom in close. With Talasea, unless I found the wrong airstrip, I cannot locate the 2 bombers, though.
