Swamp Ghost sailed last Saturday night on another stage in her journey back to the land of her birth and a future that has meaning and purpose. No longer left to rot in the jungle swamp she will now serve as a fitting reminder of the sacrifice of all Americn servicemen and women.

A question that does arise is that of the aircrafts export. The government approved the export, the salvage crew used the same Export Permit they were given four years ago. Nothing has really changed, no one was charged for alledged corruption, the PNG Museum is still in control and the only people looking stupid are the people who kicked up a fuss in the first place.

No illegality was found by the governments lawyers or the politicians for that matter. Once the "pollies" had worked out that the kangaroo court called the PAC had been lying to them, they judged the issue on the merits and decided in favor of the original decision makers. PNG does not have the will nor the capacity to ensure the long term survival of such a relic and this was recognized.

Better that she have a good home in a dry building where the same race of people that built her will now take care of her and ensure she lives on, providing the fitting tribute she should be.

Three cheers to Fred Hagen and his salvage crew for saving the Ghost.

That is excellent news.

Had always been in favor of leaving wrecks where they were but have to be realistic.

Most, i f not all of the wrecks recovered since the early seventies survive to this day whereas hundreds, including some unique Japanese types, have been scrapped locally.

I wonder if Jungle Rose and Jungle Bob are related or even married

Its good news that the B-17 is finally going to be cared for !

I wonder if Jungle Bob will be hanging up his hat, now that Swamp Ghost has finally been shipped back to the Good ol USA   :?:

Im sure with time the truth will eventually come out Jungle Bob/Jungle Rose

Wow, I didn't catch that poor choice of words! As far as I'm concerned, there's only one race - the human race.

We need to be real careful here because, first, PNG folks may very well real our posts, and there are more aircraft there that we would like to see recovered. So, how about if we speak of them, and everyone else for that matter, in terms that build good relationships.

Also, "the same race of people that built her" hasn't always made decisions that have resulted in the preservation of warbirds to the degree that we would all like.

Sincere thanks to the people of PNG who were responsible for letting Swamp Ghost go.

I have suddenly gained a lot more respect for the government of PNG. This seems to be the only result that makes any sense to me.

Glad to hear the ship set sail and that common sense prevailed.

I hope this leads to further recoveries and preservation done jointly by collectors and the PNG.

Thanks to all involved in saving this bird.

Yeap, It's good news.

Just read somes of the point of view of some PNG's people against the export, difficult to no laught when reading than "Swamp Ghost was a memorial for all PNG's citizen who died during WWII",

If the plane had been recovered and put in an museum, i could understand that but seriously: a memorial stuck in a remote swamp since 60 years, without any preservation ?

GREAT NEWS!

rumor had it that some of the pats recovered disappeared from the dock, is that true or did they just make it out before this mess started. OR is that a question better not asked. I would just hate to see a container of goodies lost.

And to back up Sasnak. This is about the legal export of a B-17 on it's way home. Lets not get side track with choice of words. If we can't say on topic I'll use my powers vested in my by Scott to keep this on topic.

Tim

I wonder what ship the Ghost is on, and if there is any way for us non government folks to track the ship.

Also, I tok some of the above texts to mean that she would be under the care of the people that built her like Americans. Don't believe race was even in the picture. Regardless, it is great news if it turns out to be a reality. It is sad that many rare airframes went to the scrapper. Wonder how many times the metals have been recycled.
