New KC-135 static display at Altus AFB

Wed Dec 09, 2009 2:16 am

It took a few weeks to get her together but there is now a KC-135A on display at Altus AFB. She is 58-0070 and just needs a paint job to be finished. The wings were hacked off for transport and scabbed back on with various patches, plates, angle iron and screws. Once it's under paint you won't be able to tell except for the steel plates on top and bottom of the wings that hold the spar together!

I see a C-141 on display in the background. There are not too many of the Starlifters on display anywhere. Good to see not all of them are goinn to the smelters out in Az.

Pat,

Here's a couple of pictures.

The C-141 was over on display by the flightline until the new parade ground was finished. When it was moved across the base and put back together I intended to take pictures but I forgot. The original location is in this thread.

Thanks for the follow up photos Brad. This C-141 and the ones at the NMUSAF and at Pima are the only ones on display that I know of.

The Museum of Aviation has one out back. Robins AFB was the depot and the one on display was the last one through the program. It's in nice shape. Those are awesome pics. Thanks for the post.

The Air Mobility Command Museum in Dover, DE has two on display as well. There is alos one on display next to the C-124 at Charleston AFB. Thanks to Rarebear for getting me in to see that one.

My nephew is with the 116th ARS of the WA ANG....
He's been told that the only 135s available to museums now are a few E models.
One was appearently going to Fairchild but instead was sold to Chile.

There's also a C-141 at Scott AFB, Belleville, IL. Its just outside the front gate. They also have a C-9, and will be getting a KC-135. The 135 is in storage on the other side of the airport on the civilian side of the house.

Other C-141s on display include Travis AFB, March AFB, McChord AFB, Edwards, AFB, Dobbins ARB, and (I'm guessing) McGuire AFB.

I want to thank you for taking these pictures.
This KC-135 is my dad's plane from Vietnam. I've been searching for information on it, pictures, anything.
I happened to find your picture of it after searching for 58-0070, and I'm glad I did.
The last we knew, it was at Sheppard as a maintenance training bird.
I wish my dad was still alive to go to Altus and see it.
We lost him to cancer in 2004.
I told my mom about it today and we're making the trip to Altus soon to get pictures and show my son.

I've got some pictures of it in flight over the pacific, refueling over Vietnam, and sitting on the tarmac at Hawaii and Guam.
I've also got some stories of things that took place with that plane, passed down from my dad.

Thanks again

64Zebra,

Welcome aboard WIX. As a former gas-passer/135 driver myself, I'm really happy you found pictures of your Dad's old mount. When you get the opportunity to do so, please post the pictures you have of 58-0070 when it was in service. We'd love to see them here.
