Warbird Information Exchange

Hi all--

An acquaintance asked me a short while ago what Warbirds there might be to see during a trip to the New Orleans LA area. Not my region! Thought someone on here might have some pointers though...

Be sure to check out the D-Day Museum. Everything is static but worth the visit.

There is a display at a National Guard facility with some post-war warbirds...F-15 and other stuff. it was written up awhile back in FlyPast.

The Air Park at the Powder Magazine, on St Claude Ave in New Orleans, has 6-7 aircraft, including an A-26. Haven't been there, I've just seen the brochures.

If you want to drive about 2 hours, there are some warbirds at the USS Alabama battleship museum.

Any idea as to which A-26 they have?

I've been to the USS Alabama museum. The aircraft are all static and from what I saw and recall of them, they are begining to show some fairly serious signs of corrosion. Sad really as there is a B-25 down there and I'd really hate to see it dissolve under that salt water from the Gulf.

When I was last in New Orleans this place was called "The Friends of Jackson Barracks Military Museum". The A-26 serial number that I recorded was 44-35937 (C/N 29216). This bird used to be in open storage at El Bosque AB, Santiago according to the latest Warbirds Directory.

I shot a photo of it, but it's in a pretty hard place to shoot a "good" picture due to the closeness of all of the aircraft on display, and the fence that both you and the aircraft are inside of. (I couldn't get far enough back to get the whole plane in the pic.) I don't have a scanner, but I would be happy to snail mail you a copy if you'd like.

And Steve, I would recommend this place to your friend, as it is a nice little collection. E-mail me for a phone number for the museum if you think they might be interested in going there.

USS Alabama Park has cleaned up their act. B-52,Albatross, are still outside as are some other types. Extensive work has been accomplished on the B-25. F-4 is on a pole at the entrance. They have completed a concrete cofferdam around the battleship , she's sitting in the mud. The sub is now on dry land next to the new aircraft display facility. Corsair AU-1, A-12, Huey, Mustang and a few others are inside. As a the USS Kidd is up the road in Baton Rouge.

When I was at the USS Alabama in 97 they seemed to have a really nice display building up inside the new building. Everything inside was in really nice shape. Really glad to hear the B-25 is inside now, I think that was still out side then. My only complaint with the place was I did not take enough pictures and they have the F4U-7 labeled as an AU-1. That is two isn’t it?

My Brother is moving to Georgia this year so I hope to make it back there and Pensacola.
