Yak3, Yak 9, and Yak 11

Hello Folks:

We had a very enthused discussion about the comparison Wirraway, Boomerang, and T-6. So how about the Yak series?

Anyway, it appears kind of straight forward to convert a Yak 11 to a Yak 3. So given that fact what's the difference between the Yak-3 and Yak 11, apart from the engine, prop, and the seating?

In addition, what's the difference between the Yak 3 and Yak 9? The difference I can see are possible the engine and the cowling.

I 've read some of it in magazines and books that were published before Classic Wings existed.

Very well done and informative articles(Thanks Dave!!!). These Aircraft are probably the most bang for the buck especially the Radial Yak-3's which I am saving for. I wish Eastern Fighters would get a website going. I think they could sell quite a few, they look like quality machines.

Depends if you want current info or not I suppose, with input from people who have done the conversions.

Bear in mind that the so-called 'Yak-3s' are really nothing of the kind. They are converted Yak-11s, or re-engined new-build aircraft.

The only genuine Yak-3s are Klimov-engined originals. The conversions are dimensionally different from the orginals, and all have a different powerplant from the original Klimov installation.

Do you know the specific differences in the airframe? They've got to be close, because they were all constructed simply with wooden wings.

Both the Yak -9UT and Yak-9P had all metal wings as did the Yak-11

I have more, but these show some of the military areas. Morotai has nothing much that's obvious, but the local military and villagers there think there are still various planes in the brush which are not visible. In fact there are P-47 tail piece that a couple of TNI Lt's have found in the brush.
