Goodyear Airshow Nov 1986

Fri May 14, 2010 2:12 pm

This airshow was held Nov.1986 at the ex-NAF Litchfield Park in Goodyear, AZ. The majority of the planes came from the Planes of Fame and the Confederate Air Force. Another AZ blue sky day.

I was working that show. I was with Sentimental Journey and was giving tours. In the 4th photo behind the HU-16 is where Pappy Boyington and Mike Kawato had thier booths set up. Kawato claimed to have shot Pappy down, but he was proved to be a loser by Martin Caiden and one of our member Robert Aldrich, who was with intelligence in the pacific in WWII.

The Invader was later destroyed in a crash in NM

Lefty Gardiner was there with White Lightning but when he pitched out to land Friday the impellor driveshaft for the supercharger on #1 engine broke. John Gerric and I worked on it through most of Friday night and finally got it back together and running late Saturday night and Lefty was able to fly his show Sunday. Doug Champlin had a display Allison at his museum at Falcon Field and he loaned us the replacement parts we needed. THANK YOU DOUG!!!!-- Many people told us that we couldn't get it apart enough to fix it without taking the engine out as everything is so close in a P-38. We were able to get it done though.
A side note about the A-26 that was at the show that later crashed. They had flown the airplane in an airshow somewhere in the mid-west and lost an engine. When the airplane had been fixed they invited me to go with them to bring the airplane home. I couldn't go as I was scheduled to fly with the Air Force. That was the flight it crashed.

Could you be Roger N##z by any chance. You are right about the P-38 N25Y. I have photos of her pulled to the side and being worked on right next to a hangar/building. The negative with N25Y was not included in the pile of negatives I had scanned. If you are Roger N. it was a UTA weekend at Luke.
