Warbird Information Exchange

I thought that some of you might like to see some of my photos from last weekend’s airshow at La Ferte Alais, to the South of Paris.

A real contrast to my trip to Sun ‘n Fun last month, especially in terms of the weather, with the all-grass airfield turning into a mudbath on the first day. Several of the heavier aircraft got stuck in the mud whilst taxying (such as the Spitfire) others, such as the Skyraider, didn’t fly.

A really excellent show, including the European debut of the ‘Hintonized’ Spitfire PR.XIX PS890, shipped from Chino earlier in the year, with its Griffon 58 and contraprop arrangement from a Shackleton. The ‘109 is a Buchon re-engined with a DB-605, and the Swiss-built version of the MS.406 was repainted into French colours over the winter. Other warbirds present included the B-17 ‘Pink Lady’ and P-51 ‘Nooky Booky IV’, 3 Corsairs (of which 2 flew), F8F Bearcat (static only), no less than 5 Yak-11s, and the Skyraider.

There were a number of WWI aircraft and replicas present, including the Memorial Flight’s rotary-engined Triplane replica, a replica Bleriot and 2 Moranes.

The show was closed by the jets - Vampire, Mirage 2000 and the L-39 Breitling Team, now up to six aircraft.

What's the French WWII Fighter?

Is that a real 109?

Did you get any pics of the Na-68?

The French WW 2 fighter actually is a Swiss built D-3801 - an improved version of the Morane-Saulnier MS-406C-1.

The Bf-109G-4 is based on a Hispano Ha.1112 Buchon - and now flies with a real DB-605

Indeed it was a good show, Martin. Sorry we missed you. My first visit to La Ferte Alais, hopefully not my last.

Saturday morning was pretty good too, spent in the hangar looking at some of the WWI machines (and it was warm and dry, and the coffee and Calvados were most welcome! ). I'll post some pics up later.

Wolverine, I'll post up some shots of the NA-68 in a day or two, when I've had a chance to sort through them. I'll also post up some detail shots of the '109, in case anyone's interested.

That 109G is nice! Isn't the DB-605 the wrong engine for it? I believe only the K model had the 605, and it may not have hte structural integrity to handle that extra horsepower. If I remember correctly, the DB-601 puts out 1300hp, and the DB-605 puts out 2000hp at takeoff!

Nice pictures! Thanks. That 109 is beautiful. I hope more of the 109 projects get done in the next couple of years. It would be cool to see Spitfires, Hurricanes and 109's, doing a big BOB type of flyby.

No - the DB-605 was fitted to the Bf109G as standard - indeed it was the only significant change from the Bf109F.
