How were T-6's and SNJ's assigned to units that operated other equipment such as Mustangs or Corsairs? was it part of a unit's stateside equipment TO&E that they would have a utility airplane assigned? Or was it at the request of the C.O.? I am sure "headquarters" type units had airplanes assigned as Flight pay mounts but what about regular squadrons? was it just routine to have a few assigned as runabouts/ instrument trainers?

Can't remember were I read it, but there were 1 or 2 on all the big carriers during the war. I should have said assigned to, may not have been onboard.
