Paul Mantz Photos From the LIFE Collection circa 1949

Sun Jun 20, 2010 7:57 am

Yesterdays post about Mantz and his famous belly landing of the B-17 for the film Twelve O'Clock High got me to thinking about these photos I'd seen in the LIFE Magazine collection. Most of them date from April 1949 and show his B-25H (NX1203) and one of his P-51B Bendix Trophy racers (NX1204) to great advantage. Check out the early design camera mount for the B-25 - it's actually hanging below the nose! The "Cinerama" nose mod was a much better idea!

Enjoy and a very Happy Fathers day to all the Dads!
