Can anyone share what the development was behind the two-tone green, tan, and grey SAE camo used by the USAF? Why, when, how did it originate and which airframe was the first to wear it?

There's a couple color photos in the USAF archives of A-1E Skyraiders at McClellan AFB in 1968 and they appear to be only tan and one shade of green over grey.

The SEA camo was applied in a standard scheme on F-100s and F-105s from late 65 onward. Prior to that camo had been tested on RF-101s as early as the Cuban Missile Crisis. The later starting as two shades of green. Though the colors and patterns were layed out in T.O. 1-1-4 as early as the summer of 1965 for some reason VooDoos were still seen in experimental schemes into the late 60s, were as the Thuds and Huns carried the same ones until retirement.

It is kind of funny, but USAF F-4s were still coming out of the factory in Gull Gray/White while F-4s already in service were repainted in SEA colors when they cycled through depot.

Also the spare parts were in that gull gray/white, the F-4 my Dad was the Crew Chief on at Ton Son Nhut RVN in 68-69 time frame had its rudder damaged and the replacement was in that gull gray/white color, along with another part. He did a model depicting this and still has it I think.
