WWII Me-109 encounter with a C-47 story

Thu Sep 09, 2010 3:40 pm

This story was just told to me by my boss....
He said that there was this fella', named Anton, who was a friend of the family for 30 years.
Anton was an Me-109 pilot during WWII. He was flying along and encountered a lumbering C-47.
Easy prey he surmised. After spending some time and ALL his ammunition he managed to shoot off the left elevator, chunks of the vertical stab and a portion of the left wing tip. But the ol' gooney bird kept on flying. With no more ammo, Anton flew up alongside the C-47, saluted the
cockpit crew and then peeled away and headed for home.
I guess now, the real kicker for the story is that my boss' family is Jewish.

One other tidbit... Anton said that when the B-17s first started flying over Germany they(the Germans) would tear them up with their 109's. Later, the P-51's came along. "It was like gnats, they were all over us".
