A member of our local EAA chapter made a quick mention that he knew someone from the Lost Squadron group. He said they plan on getting the other aircraft under the ice in Greenland. He mentioned their gonna be starting this year. :shock:

There have been reports of many groups going after the remaining birds out there, but, there have been no updates on anything being done.

So, until I see some boots on the ground actually doing something, I will have to classify this as another rumor.

i hope it's true as well, but for certain 1 fact is true that the government of greenland is still not to happy about expedition recovery teams as the original team never cleaned the excavation site as promised. littered with old oil drums, junk, heavy equipment rusting away etc. if glacier girl was under 246 feet of ice in 1992 then i would bet the other aircraft have at least 300 feet of ice over them by now.

I heard the same thing from a vounteer at the the chino/ planes of fame airshow. Recovery of the 'sister ship' of Glacier Girl and Rod Lewis' name was also mentioned in the same sentence. Take it as a grain of salt; and I'm done propagating this rumor!

This past Saturday at the Hondo Fly-in we had Bob Carden give a presentation on Glacier Girl. He estimates that the planes are now covered by over 400 feet of ice and are economically un-recoverable at least for him and his Boss (Rod Lewis). So unless he is a good liar that should put to rest the Lewis connection in a recovery effort.
They are still interested in another Bolero attempt however.

Ok, this begs the environmentally wrong question... As they have been screaming about the retreating glaciers/ice cap over Greenland, how can they be under MORE ice/snow???? .... Just sayin'.........

What 'they' fail to mention is that only some, not all, glaciers are retreating... ;)

What is always fun is to see what scientific credentials the 'scientists' have that are screaming that the sky is falling. If you actually take the time to read the actual data, its is quite interesting. Oh, by the way, I am totally in favor of being environmentally responsible; we just need to address the correct issues.

Sorry for the diversion. Back to the original topic. Is the junk that was left behind from the Glacier Girl expedition still on the surface or is it now 100ft down?

Amazing in the seven years from the first expedition (that left the Bobcat there) till the recovery team got there, they had to dig down 80 ft. to get it. (Saw pictures Friday). Maybe they left it on high ground this time.

While flying (helo) back at low altitude from a nearby, ongoing MIA search, one of the team members seen the object as the helo flew over it. We had some Lost Squadron folks with us. When we got back to Kulusuk, we talked about it and from the description, it was determined to likely be the Bobcat as the position/color matched. From my historical research and actual observation of items left on hard ice and this Bobcat example.....it takes a bit for them to sink out of sight. The crashed plane we're looking for was still visable 5-6 years after the crash. We relocated some markers we planted in 2009. They were maybe 3"-4" under a crust of snow/ice. I suspect that was because it had snowed a week or so before we showed up and the snow/ice was remelting down to the original hard surface. It's a fascinating place up there. Not sure I'd want to winter-over on the ice cap though.

excellent point that not all glaciers are retreating. an unusual find in the last 5 years was 2 ww1 soldiers found in a high mountain pass still clothed & with gear!!

A couple of minutes research of how ice caps form and degrade will answer the question, if it's genuine. (For those who find that research too arduous, for the same reason the tap (faucet) and plughole do different jobs for your bath.)

Still off topic but worthy to mention....I believe I'm explaining this correctly.

Not too far from where we're working, there was a GPS tower affixed to a rock outcropping at the head of the fjord where the ice calves off. It was put there by the scientists from a U.S. university studing the ice. I have spoken to the lead professor often about our project. As the weight of the glacial ice increase/decreases, there is verticle movement in the earth's crust. The GPS tower is used to measure this verticle movement of the earth' s crust. I'm not sure of the technical in's/out's but in short...that's how it's done. There are several of these GPS towers in Greenland.

Now back on.....

The little bit I learned about ice and buried aircraft so far.....you can look at aerial pics of an area and possibly make some guesstimations of direction and speed of the ice (I can't but an ice scientist can). If you want to accurately know....you need to plant some GPS transmitters in the area of interest and do some longer term data collections to determine what is actually taking place. Once you get that info...it's then just a matter of getting out the calculator and doing the math.
