Warbird Information Exchange

Was wondering what the plans were for this B-25? It was delivered flyable and (as far as I know) display ready to Dulles. It went into covered storage and hasn't been seen since. Kind of curious as to why it never made it over to the Hazy center? I would think it wouldn't need much if any work to put it on display...

APG85, they have been working on restoring it. Getting it ready for the move to U/H. When we had the A-4 up there last November they had been working on it for a while.

Thanks. Do you know what sort of restoration work it needed...any details? I remember seeing this aircraft at the Sussex Airshow in Northern New Jersey in the early 80's. It looked sharp at the time...

I know they were doing a lot of cleaning and maybe some skin and paint work.

You know how the Smithsonian works, get a perfectly good airplane let it sit out for 10-20 years so that there is something to restore back to the way you got it. Huh ?

NASM website slightly wrong on WW2 B-25 operators. It does not show that the Royal Australian Air Force operated 70 B-25's.....and RAAF guys flew many with RAF in Europe and 5th AF in SWPA

It's, unfortunately a government thing. This was a "flight ready" B-25 upon her delivery/donation to the NASM.....they are sooooooooooo slowwwww. Is our "Flak Bait" still in a stage of Disassembly?

Is there are more recent information on when this plane might be moved into U-H?

Are there any other aircraft still in the support building near U-H? As best as I can tell, nearly all (Shuttle, Ju-52.3m, B-17, A-6, F-4, etc.) have now been removed from this building. Any what are the plans for this building?

I think there is a C-130 still in this building.

Glad to hear that the C.130 is no longer outside. I have heard that they came close to moving this into U-H, but then decided not to. This is a historic C.130, with USAF and Vietnamese service.

I was under the impression that the Herc was to large to fit inside the storage building. I had also heard that the NASM had no intention of putting it on display...

As historic as that Herc is, it would take a lot of work at this point to make it display worthy. They might be better off (if they want one) waiting for one of the MC-130E Combat Talons to retire (withing the next couple of years) and grab one of those. It could be flown directly to the museum and be essentially display ready. All of them have unique and long combat histories. 64-0565 is a veteran of Eagle Claw among many other operations. I was a little surprised when the first four retired this year that neither the Smithsonian or the NMUSAF tried to get one (it takes a lot of coordination on the part of the Air Force and the interested party though). Three went to the bone-yard and one went to Hurlburt's Airpark where work is underway to configure and paint it to make it appear as she did around 1980.

Hey APG85 do you know if they are going to her whiskers back on? The first Talons I worked on were all Fulton birds (0523, 0555, 0566, and I think 0561) assigned to the 7th SOS, 39th SOW. The Talons looked strange to me with the whiskers gone!

Yup, Fulton Whiskers are in-work. She'll look Fulton capable when she's finished this Spring...
