Corsair Production Numbers

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out the specific numbers of Corsairs produced from each factory.

Chance Vought:
Brewster:
Goodyear:

More specifically Im trying to figure out just how many Corsairs came out of the Stratford Plant before CV moved to Dallas. If anyone has some ideas or leads that would be most helpful!

From "America's Hundred-Thousand,

Production thru 1945
Vought - 6674
Goodyear - 4017
Brewster - 735
There were 1859 F4U-4 aircraft accepted by the end of August, 1945 (essentially the end of the war); 2050 was the total F4U-4 production through April, 1946.

Not sure what the split was for -5's between Stratford and Dallas.

I thought it was my understanding that -5's were specifically built only in Dallas, and that only some of the -4's were built here before they moved. Ideas, comments? :?:

I think there were a certain number of Dash 5's built in CT before the move to Dallas.
Remember, they were still in Stratford for almost 2 years before they moved.

The first production -5 was flown Oct. 1, 1947 at Stratford. The first Dallas production -5 was flown April 1949.

If I'm not mistaken(I have been many times before) were Corsairs not built until 1952,do these post war corsairs not count in the overall total of planes built?just wonderin? :?:

Yes, Corsairs were built until Dec. 1952, but they all wouldn't count towards the production total of the Stratford built Corsairs.

Hmmm, well you should know, "Iz wuz never good at any of dem book learnins and numba countin" so..., Im going to go with the rough estimate of over 7,000 being produced in Stratford. I'd like to hammer down the exact number, but really a close estimate is fine. (My friend and I are trying to put the finishing touches on a commercial for the Corsair Project) Stay tuned. :wink:

And Mike, thanks for your help. Already this thread has given me some new insight. Nice to know that whenever I see a -4 out there, I now know it was built here in CT.

Chris, the f4u-5 was made,( at least some of them,) in Statford but the major part of them came from Vought's plant in Dallas. First flying in 1946, A total of 568 were made of this version, including f4u-5n, 5nl and f4u-5p. The F4u-4 was made until 1947 then switched over to making the -5s that same year. If i were to take a guess, i'd say maybe 100 here in Conn. and the rest down in Texas? But that's a complete guess. If you contact the sikorsky archives, they would have the numbers, they must!
