Warbird Information Exchange

On a P-38 what are the intakes below the spinner and what are the intakes bulging out of the sides of the tail boom. I am guessing that one is for cooling and the other is for the turbo charger.

Trying to be a little less ignorant here, so look for more great stuff from WIX.

The inlets in the booms are for the coolant radiators.

The inlets under the spinners (enlarged on the P-38J and later models) are for the oil coolers and intercooler (i.e. cooling the charged air from the turbochargers before it enters the carb) radiators.

The turbos themselves are air-cooled.
