MIDDLETON - Mr. Robert W. "Bill" Fox, 81, of Middleton, a retired US Airways Captain, Air Force veteran of three wars and the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for Valor, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.

Born and raised in West Springfield, he was the son of the late Hiram and Ann (Crean) Fox. He joined the Army Air Corps while still a student at West Springfield High School. After completion of Aviation Cadet Exams and training, he graduated as a twin engine pilot in June 1944. Mr. Fox was assigned as a B-24 copilot and later as a P-51 pilot in the 15th Air Force in Europe. When the War ended, he joined the Military Government as assistant commander of a small medieval town in Bavaria, called Ocksenfort. Mr. Fox flew C-46's out of Bedford Air Force Base while attending Clark University, graduating in 1950. He was attending American International College in Springfield when he was recalled to service for the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington as an instructor and check pilot and served in Korea as a B-26 Night Intruder pilot from 1951 to 1952. He taught history at West Springfield High School for two years and then returned to flying.
