The Aviation Museum of Kentucky:

I had the opportunity of visiting again, the AMK last Friday. Their new hangar looks great [it is the former TAC-Air building], and now they have a great looking building front end, with a gift shop, space for the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame, as well as administrative offices and meeting area.

There was going to be a volunteer meeting that morning, because a "soft opening" of the museum will take place soon, or already took place this weekend.

It was nice to see the museum with more aircraft than it used to have in the past. Photography inside is difficult due to the placement of the aircraft. Photos of the Phantom and the Voodoo on the outside ramp were out of the question, due to airport security issues that have yet to be finalized.

TAC-Air has a new building next door, and they have a beautiful Beech D-17 Staggerwing hanging from the floor on their main lobby. There was barely any space left to fit the airplane in, but they did it. I believe this would be a new entry for the Aerialviews registry.

Saludos!

Tulio

Lexington. After driving past it more times than I can count I plan to stop by sometime this year. I was passing by in Feb and of course it was closed for the move.

The South side of the airport [Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, KY] on the general aviation area, and next door to TAC-Air.

Saludos,

Tulio

That Beech is a G-17S. One of 20 built post-war.

The museum website doesn't list collection info and a search on airliners.net didn't produce a photo.

Anyone know the tail number of the T-38 and if it had been an actual Thunderbird?

Ken

They have a little document for the public, that lists the aircraft on display, but does not provide any data regarding s/n's

Let me see if I have a good shot of the T-38, that shows any numbers

Saludos,

Tulio

There was a sign in front of the airplane, stating in part, the following:

Airplane is an AT-38B built in 1964. The AMK has named as its honorary pilot Gen. Dan Cherry, a native Kentuckian and former Thunderbird commander and lead pilot. Its restoration to full Thunderbird colors was led by Vince Hammons, a former Thunderbirds crew chief, and by AMK volunteer Randy Fuller.

The Museum acquired this T-38 with the assistance of Mr. Jim Hardymon and the Textron Corporation.

After reviewing my photos, I could not find any serial number or any other information that could be useful, other than the airplane carrying a number "1" on the vertical surfaces of the empennage.

Saludos,

Tulio

Baugher lists it as:

13292 (c/n N.5721) converted to AT-38B. To AMARC as TF0114 Sep 6, 1991. To Kentucky Aviation Museum, Lexington, KY in 1999
