Interesting picture. Accounting to Jim Duffy, who was an ensign in VF-15 and flew mainly as John Strane's wing man, "Dashing Dave" made a practice of taking the best of the replacement Hellcats that flew aboard the Essex for his personal airplanes. Duffy claimed one new F6 one day only to have CAG McCampbell step in and get it, leaving Duffy with an old "clunker" instead. This per a conversation with Jim several years ago.

Interesting to note the gunsight/bore sighting apparatus installed on the front of the cowl.
A round sight for the gun sight is centered above the nosecase and an arm on each side has a flap hanging on each end to sight the bore of the barrel on.
