I will finally get to spent some time in TX for some of the best BBQ in NA.

Best reccomendations for WB aviation stuff.

There is Cavaugh (sp?) museum a bit north of that area. That is well worth the jump up there.

Where is Chuckie (B-17)? Also Texas Raiders and the A6M of the CAF unit?

Be sure to see the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Dallas. There are some really nice birds there, including the only airworthy F9F.

And when you go, try to find out the status of the P-47 restoration. It's the CAFs bird, but Cavanaugh was rebuilding it after it was heavily damaged after it caught on fire.

Rob, don't mean to be a smart a$$ but this ain't Maine or even New England ! Do you know how far it is to Midland from DFW area ? 276 nautical, if you flew ! Much closer to Dallas is Chuckie's place at Meacham Field, Ft. Worth, Cavanaugh Flight Museum, Addison, DFW Wing CAF at Lancaster, Texas. As you said, Frontiers of Flight at Love Field is in their new facility and Chris Woodul is the curator. With prior warning I'm sure Chris could show you around their museum.

Cavanaugh's, KADS is the best in the area. Addison is not that far if you are staying on the Dallas side of DFW. When you go in ask if Doug is there, "FG1D Pilot". Chuckie is over at Meacham, KFTW. American Airlines has a nice place to see. The Frontier of Flight is located at Love Field, KDAL. The CAF has a place down in Lancaster, just south of Dallas. A lot to see and do

I should have went to Cavanaugh's, when I lived in Grand Prairie in 2003; I didn't make the time for it.

The American Airlines place is the C. R. Smith museum and it's nice. The folks with Chuckie are also nice and have a neat hanger. Went to both places in '99 for ACE camp.
Does anyone know if there's anything left where the old North American Aviation plant used to be?

Southwest Aerospace no longer exists. If you are here over a weekend, I can point you out in the boonies to a friend's place where we have numerous L-5's going together and an L-3, T-6, Navion and who knows what else.

Depends on how much time you have. As mentioned there is Cavanaugh and Vintage Flying Museum (B-17 Chuckie)... but if you want to see some other airports just to cruise around there are a few to work into the plan.

There's a Mig-17 rotting away on display in front of an antique shop just east of Dallas on Highway 80. The female owner of the shop found it a few years back at a museum in Norway, purchased it, and had it shipped back to her shop as a roadside attention-getter. After arrival it was basically parked out front in the grass median between the parking lot and the highway access road and left there. The starboard wingtip has some slight damage where it was apparently hit by someone who couldn't properly park their car.

It's 100% complete including the engine, but I was told that it was not for sale at any reasonable price. For now it remains in the Texas sun with the cockpit upholstery slowly turning crispy, the canopy turning opaque, and the main gear rapidly sinking into the lawn, owned by an antique dealer with no passion for aviation artifacts.

If you have the time, and this is somewhat related to aviation (well, very much related) you should visit the Squadron Signal Shop in Carrollton, TX, just North of Dallas.

They usually have discounted books and other materials for sale.

If you manage to get a car, drive north on US-75, to the Sherman - Denison area, and look for the Grayson County airport; it used to be Perrin AFB, and there are several warbirds based there; last time I visited they had a couple of Convair 440s, a Carvair, a Mig-21 (LIM) a MiG-17, a Corsair, AT-6, Iskra, and several others inside a large hangar on the North side of the airport. Nice people, they allowed me entry without a problem, and photos were not a problem.

Also on Hwy 75 North, on the (R) side, there is an F-86 on a VFW post on the McKinney area; there was nothing to see at the McKinney airport when I stopped a couple of weeks ago.

I've seen Cavanaugh about 10 years ago. I guess another visit cannot hurt )

Just out of curiosity, back then there used to be an AFB with a lot of WW2 birds outside. Including the B24 that went to Duxford.

If I remember well:
- B17, P82, P38, P51, etc....

Back then beeing a Canadian, I could not get access.

Do you know if this rule has changed or if the birds are now available for public view ?

That would be Lackland AFB which is way south and a good drive from DFW.

I'm sure access is restricted but I would email base public affairs -> publicaf@lackland.af.mil and check first.

There was a combat veteran F-105 just off the flight line deep into the base @ Carswell when I was there back in the 80's as well.

That sounds like Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. The parade grounds has a lot of WWII Warbirds.

Also, good luck with the BBQ as I'm still looking for some as the best I had around here is Bubba's in Ennis, Texas. They have a lot of R/C Warbirds hanging from the ceiling. The best I had was down in Leon Springs by Boerne Stage Field at a place called Rudy's, the orignal Rudy's.
