Updated F3D Image. What's wrong with it? Nothing!

Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:09 pm

Here's an image of an F3D that wasn't included in my upcoming publication on the aircraft. Can you guess why?

3-wheel Jeep, check
Crew looking at the engine, check
Pilot watching the crew, check
Some guys without a shirt on, check
Cannon doors open, check

Looks like a typical summer day at Pax River. :)

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the pic.

BTW, here's a better pic of the 3-wheel Jeep from the other side -

Well darn. The publisher thought the vehicle was cropped. I didn't know anything about the 3-wheeler. Maybe its not too late to include the image.

Many thanks for pointing out the non-problem.

Well, like ACary I was dudded on the 'missing' rear wheels! It didn't look like a modded photo to me, but if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed the vehicle existed; thanks for the insight guys, I learned something today. I can now pass onto tomorrow.

Didn't they steer from the back like a forklift so they could maneuver on the flight deck? Lets hear it for the 'GO DEVIL' flathead 4 cylinder engine.

They did. IIRC, in "Men of the Fighting Lady" had them in action all over the deck. Maybe "The Bridges of Toko-Ri". I remember it had F9Fs in it.

APU for carriers, modified from CJ-2A Jeeps by a company called O.E. Szekey & Assoc. in Philly.
Only one or two have been restored and I'm about to buy 1 & 1/2 one this summer! :)
It needs work, but they are not common by any means.
Double rear wheel turns like a street sweeper and front axle is fixed and only drives the vehicle.
It will turn completely around in seven a foot Dia. circle.
Hopefully, I'll have two when I'm done!

'Men of the Fighting Lady' was just on TCM and they did show the half jeeps on deck a lot, also footage of a VOUGHT F6U 'PIRATE' in an on deck accident/fire.

Jerry, you can tell everyone that it was built as Luke Skywalkers sand speeder prototype-

And me and my old eyeballs really appreciate 'Black dog' on G 503 posting the info about them in 1970 BARRACUDA 'Sublime' green on a very pale grayish blue background, I thought reading it would give me a head ache, but I now have a lower opinion of it.

The one posted is an early version, before they added small out rigger skids and later small wheels so it wouldn't tip over while turning fast.
Mine is a later version with the improved "Hurricane" engine, hence the bulge added to the hood. The Go Devil engine of the original CJ's and WWII jeeps was not as tall as the Hurricane engine.

Well, we all know that a bulged hood scoop means more horsepower, 64 FORD THUNDERBOLT, LS-6 CHEVELLE, AIR GRABBER ROAD RUNNER, big block CORVETTE.......and the P.R. photos of 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits on the 'cat in one of the back motor Swamp Rats when he was sponsored by the NAVY

I want to hear more about your F3D book. Do you have a website with the details?

No website...Squadron/Signal is the publisher. It will cover the history of the aircraft with 100+ photos, line art, profiles, etc.
