WIX's very own Randy Haskins gives a scintillating interview on an EAA Video dated June 15:

Yeah, but here's the difference, Jack....my brother can use both hands to simulate a dogfight when he's explaining....whereas WE have to use BOTH hands just to simulate the P-3 chasing a submarine.

(or rather, a per-diem check....)

I think I have a picture of him in his 'deployment stache' from his first tour over in Iraq. And yeah, it looks just as bad as my deployment stache from the Gulf. But they're supposed to, right?

I'd ask what you P-3 guys are using to simulate the "submarine" but I'm afraid what the answer would be!

I didn't post it here for fear of embarrassing Randy, but who am I kidding, fighter pilots don't embarrass...

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

I was honored and humbled that Zach invited me to be interviewed for the EAA project, especially considering the company I was in sitting in front of that camera. I don't in any way feel that anything I've done can match what so many of those interviewed have done during their military service. My hat is truly off to those guys -- their stories are much more amazing.

Never expected to see it posted on the 'net, though. You're right, Z, not embarassed...although I regret not going back to my notes beforehand and reading up on that one day so I could have remembered the callsigns and other details. It's amazing that so much of missions like that stick out in my mind clear as if I had just done it yesterday (like what it looked like, or how I felt), yet I couldn't tell you what the date or day of that particular mission was just by memory. When I get a chance, I'll go dig through my journal and get the notes I wrote after that sortie and post 'em here.

I am remiss that in that interview I never mentioned my WSO on that day of the story I told, Capt Matt 'RAID' Chapman, who was as equal a partner in saving those guys on the ground as I was. It's a team effort out there. RAID is just about to leave the USAF in the next few days for his next venture in law school...and if he's ever in private practice, he's the one I'm going to hire when I need legal help!! Good luck to him, although I'm sure he doesn't need it.
