Hi All,

I could use a little help from the Corsair experts out there. Here's what's up.

I'd like to begin cutting the main instrument panel for my TBU/TBY cockpit project. Unfortunately the microfilm image quality of the drawings I have varies considerably. As luck would have it, the drawing for the panel (Vought called it a "Board Assembly") looks like a feral cat got at it--one can literally see the cellophane tape used to hold portions of the original together.

Alright, enough whining. I believe the material thickness off the drawing is .125, but the rest of the material specs is obliterated. I think part of the wording might be "MAG ALLOY," but--like I stated--it's too much of a mess to tell for sure.

Being of similar vintage, I'm hoping that perhaps the F4U used similar materials for "the board." Could someone please provide me with the material info for the F4U's main instrument panel? For those with any Corsair restoration experience, what material is being used to remanufacture the main panel (especially if the original was made of one of the funkier alloys)?

.125" 2024-T3 should be just fine and quite obtainable.

I see your dilemma. Yes, the corsair instrument panel was made of a magnesium alloy... can't remember which off the top of my head, but no one makes them like that now, as the alloy is too hard to come by. They use .125" aluminium plate instead. Most of the repro-manufacturers use 6061 Aluminium, since it's non-structural, cheaper, and easier to get hold of.

Heads is 2024; Tails is 6061.

Just get 6061-T6 sheet from the local metal yard. Once it is painted nobody will know the difference!
