P-61 crew question

Sat Aug 13, 2011 5:05 pm

Recently I visited the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy museum and had a look at their P-61 Black Widow. Of course I forgot to ask a docent... but it made me wonder who sat where in that airplane. Obviously the pilot sat in one of the two front cockpits, but which one, high or low? Likewise, did the gunner or radar operator sit in the back? I'm sure someone here will tell me- thanks.

From front to back the crew was Pilot, gunner, radar observer.

This is correct for the three-man crew.

I'm away from my sources at the moment, but I recall reading that at least one squadron in the ETO (operating with two-man crews) re-rigged the radar position to directly behind the pilot.
