Help. Does anyone know who these people are at 1980 Osh?

Thu Sep 01, 2011 2:09 pm

I need some help with one of the pictures I recently scanned for the Spirit of Flight Center in Colorado.
The Spirit of Flight Center received about 1000 rare photos and we are trying to scan and cataloged all of them.

One photo is of Pappy Boyington sitting in a Corsair...
I was wondering if anyone here knew who the other people were?

I think this was at Oshkosh sometime in the 80's...
Anyone know who these people are?

The only thing I know for sure is ... it is not "Jack Cook"... :)

I believe the Corsair is this one, http://www.warbirdregistry.org/corsairr ... 92629.html

As a teenager at Oshkosh I remember seeing a young guy fly this Corsair and his Dad remarked about him flat spotting a tire or something along those lines. This was late 70's - early 80's.

I may be way off base on this one, but believe the young guy in the center may be the son of one of the owners.

Is the guy (lower left) with glasses John Schafthausen?

If you look closely at the admission badges they are wearing, this would be Oshkosh 1977.

One of them could very well be John Stokes or Bob Friedman. Ownership of the plane passed from the former to the latter that same year.

Can't help you with the names, but the pic is cool. That was the first Corsair I ever saw in real life, at the Selfridge show about a month earlier. At the time my friends and I thought "Ba Ba Blacksheep" was the coolest TV show EVER, and were totally stoked to see a real Corsair, as well as 6 "real" Japanese Zeroes (we were 13, and hadn't learned the cruel truth about the Tora birds yet. )

Chris Brame,
Great pictures!!!

Looks like many of the pictures in this project are also from the 1977 Oshkosh event.
