I'm guessing the first photo was taken in the U.K. judging from that Shackleton tail in the left part of the photo.

Do you happen to have any photos of PB4Ys at NAS Hutchinson, Kansas? We have spent a few hours exploring the remains of the field and they had a goodly number of Liberators and Privateers pass through there.......

I may have some. 99% of my photos are still images and have not converted them.

Cool pics, thanks for sharing! I've been a huge fan of the Privateer since I was old enough to know what one was, but this is the first time I've seen one without the ERCO ball turret in the nose and a Consolidated unit in its place. Anybody have anymore info on this?

And what's with the glass dome under the nose?

I think a few of the early Privateers had the Consolidated nose turret setup of the B-24J, although it's interesting to see one in what appears to be overall Dark Sea Blue. Also of interest are the low profile Martin upper turret domes. I thought all Privateers had the later "High Hat" style turrets. The object under the nose is probably an antenna housing, and most likely white, like the smaller ones on the fuselage.

It sure would be nice if 'someone' started reproducing the old MATCHBOX kit in 1/72 again!

You're in luck..Revell of Germany just re-released it a few months ago! Of course, it still has all the "issues" of the original Matchbox release, and the plastic only comes in one color now, but it's the only injection-molded Privateer we're ever likely to see.

Sadly, the Cobra Company update set, which resolves a lot of the "issues", remains OOP. Now would actually be a good time for them to restart production, given the re-release of the kit.

Being a 55+ year plastic modeller, 'issues' are what makes a kit interesting and challenging and I've built the MATCHBOX kit a couple of times, I've never been a 'squirt 5 oz of geewhiz glue in box corner and shake' style of modeller. Everyones going to groan, but in real modelling days, if you wanted a particular 'something' you scratched it up, you didn't e-mail away for parts I think thats called 'creativity' .

I understand that the original protoype PB4Y-2 (known at the time as the "Sea Liberator") was fitted with the standard B-24 twin tail. Do any photos exist of this early model ? Apparently due to aerodynamic problems it was re-fitted with the characteristic vertical.
