Me109G red 7 crashes during landing

Just saw this on another forum:



The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-4 (MAC) was yesterday destroyed during a landing accident. The pilot, Sigi Knoll (69) is ok.

I predict the extremely valuable engine will be purchased and used to get a different aircraft into the air, unless the engine itself was extensively damaged as well. The owners of 'Red 7' were apparently not insured.

This is really sad news.... however, from the photos, the aircraft was certainly not even close to being destroyed. The airframe has some relatively minor damage to the wings, and tail, and the engine was ripped off, but, by today's standards it is eminently rebuildable. I am so glad that the pilot is ok... what was the reason for the crash? Looks suspiciously like a ground loop to me, but then again, what do I know?!

Yes he is..world renowned for doing so. I am sure the team can rebuild it, but a terrible shame after the years of work that went into converting the airframe from a Buchon..one of the nicest examples around.

It's good that the pilot walked away from it. I think the airframe is totally rebuildable, seeing the beginning of some of the former projects that are flying now, this one is in pretty good shape, considering.

Not having hull insurance, I can understand that. A four party ownership, years of restoration, probably a million + euro's into it. That's enough to tap any budget extremely hard. The hull insurance, if insisted upon, is probably stupifying, and if required, would probably mean the plane wouldn't have been flying.
