Looking for the data plate in our H-19 and cant seem to find it. Anyone have any pictures of an example or know the whereabouts of the location of the data plate on the airframe? Best regards.

Hello,

The main data plate is attached to the starboard side of the drive shaft housing, that runs from the engine to the main rotor gearbox, between the pilots seats. If it is still in place, it should easily be seen by standing under the right hand seat and looking up to the left. If not, you will find 4 holes where it used to be attached.

Please e-mail me at SIDSIKO@aol.com for pictures of where it can be found and other ways to i/d your helicopter if the main plate is missing.

I have the remains of an H-19C fuselage and there is a data plate on the right inside of back area right where the tail cone would be attached...only one that I could find... :|

Woodsey,
Is it a SIKORSKY etched factory data plate or one with just msn info steel stamped or vibrapenned on it? Our friends over in Blue Blazer land require an extra data plate be affixed to some airframes and that it be on the rear of the fuselage since, in their experience, an airplane has never backed into a mountain, they are sort of Gummint required ear tags.

Hello Woodsy,

What you have there will be a Mod plate, measuring 2 by 3 inches. On it it will have the drawing or part number, contract number, serial number and date accepted. If you can read off the serial number, I will be able to tell you the true identity of your H-19C.

Woodsy,
Any chance you have the mesh panel that is on the right hand side of this shot? Ours is all boogerd up at the top, love to find an original as opposed to making one from scratch.

The Inspector and SIDSIKO - The data plate is - as you say - 2"x3" metal plate and has a couple of bits of info on it. I was able to get Army Serial - 114306...I'll have to look at it Saturday (11-12-11) and see what else it says. I have the instrument panel (stripped) and as I recall it confirms serial.

Cherrybomber13 - I will PM you on 11-12-11 with mesh info. Not much left of old bird besides fuselage and some loose items. :|

Hello Woodsy,

What you have there is a H-19C, serial 51-14306. Sikorsky construction number 55.300

It was accepted by the US Army on the 12th of December 1952. It spent the later part of its life in the early 1960's at Fort Hood, TX. It ended its days at the school at Fort Rucker, AL, where it became a training aid in 1964.

From there, the W. Michigan University at Kalamazoo aquired it and gave it the registration N30057, although I doubt if it ever flew.

Cherrybomber13 - Your instrument panel looks more complete than what is left of 306. Funny how patchworky panels get as aircraft age, but it still looks good...

SIDSIKO - Great information you have passed on. The remains wound up at Plainwell municiple airport near Kalamazoo and bore the brunt of children and pickers over the years. I purchased remains - I believe in 1999 - still in Army Drab - and it has set outside ever since. :| Woodsy (Leon Cleaver)

Since the tail boom is attached, here's something you might try.

On the aft, right side of the fuselage, just forward of where the boom attaches, you'll find four rivets about two inches apart forming the corners of a square. These rivets hold in place the modification plate which Sid described. Below and I believe slightly forward of this is a hinged inspection plate. It might require someone with monkey arms (surely someone on the team has monkey arms, right?) but, holding a digital camera (with a wrist strap!) set for closeup and with the flash on, stick it up there and snap away. It'll take a lucky strike and with the flash, probably a slight angle but, you just might be able to capture an image. Here's what the mod plate looks like:

If you try this and it works, I'd really appreciate knowing - and a posted image of the results would be nice too! If it's a miserable failure - blame the person with the monkey arms.

Drew,

What are the locations of the three plates? I'm assuming the first is the mod plate, right aft fuselage just ahead of the tail-boom attach point. Sid's database shows 52-7573 (cn 55-702) with a delivery date of May 1954 which agrees with the data plates accepted date of April 1954.

The second plate is a mystery. Is the date October 1954?

The third plate contains the serial number 51-3902 (cn 55-330) which was a H-19B delivered to the USAF on 3/16/1953 which agrees with the acceptance date of 2/3/1953. Where is this plate attached?

Andrew;

Good day!!

Nice subject and pics of your H-19!

I have the same questions. Plz let me know where are those mod plates specifically located. We have an H-19 poss FAH 820/821 S. of the border at Toncontin, upside down that may have one of these id plates stll in place. Buno 13XXXX for now!

I'm sure we'll be able to find at least the mod plates. The main Sikorsky id plate is gone. In the background is our H-19 center fuselage & in the foreground the remains of F4U-4 FAH 617 c. 2005. Photo via Ennio Devoto

Thank you for your help.
