I'm not sure if this was my imagination, but I seem to remember a short blurb with an unclear photo in Air Classics in the late 60's or very early 70's about a Spitfire with incomplete STOL modifications somewhere in South America, possibly Argentina.

Am I totally nuts, or does anyone else remember this? If it was real, does anyone have any information to share?

This always seems to be a really off the wall concept, but then again who'd have thought that Kaman would build a tilt-wing turboprop VSTOL based on a Grumman Goose?

Not STOL Spitfire but VTOL Spitfire :)

Try a Google search on the Brazilian 'Convertiplano'.

It never flew but used the wings and some bits from Mk XIV RM874.

It will be fully covered in Volume II of the Spitfire Survivors book, currently in production.

Peter - Thank you for the information. I look forward to the new edition of your book -- I have the original. - Dave

People do some "unusual" things with airplanes. Somewhere in one of my aviation books there is a color photo of a Piper Cherokee that was made into an autogyro. The photo was shot at the old downtown Isla Verde Airport in San Juan, PR. No mention of whether it actually flew or not.
