Hi Guys,

Me & my friend Malc are 2 local guys from the Burtonwood/Lancs area & we have found quite a few items of interest on an old 'dump' around the Great Sankey area.

We have found exhust manifolds from aircraft along with radio equipment & our recent find is a quarter panel window fully in tact with plexiglass from a liberator (we think?).

We are trying to find anyone that was stationed at Burtonwood during the periods 1945 - 1955+ to see if they can tell us more about the area that we are finding these items?

Regards

Gary & Malcolm

Ask the neighbors! Folks living in the area should be able to answer questions or fill in teeny details that those outside the area wouldn't know about. Might be worth the price of a pint or two :drink3:

And welcome aboard the merry go round!

Burtonwood... B-29's, MATS aircraft such as C-47's and C-54's
It was a heavy maintenance base for the Berlin Airlift aircraft and F-84's and F-86's as well.

(According to Wikipedia... )

Hi Zane,

Thanks for the info.

What we are looking for is anyone that was actually there at Burtonwood during the period 1945 - 1955+ that can tell us more about a 'dump' site known as the RAF Dump Site not far from Great Sankey.

We want to know what was placed into these dumps?

As I say we are finding radio equipment, exhaust manifolds, plexiglass & hydraulic piping etc & we know from 20 Years ago that there was alluminium engine cowlings sticking out of the ground that have since been covered over or dug up & removed, but not all of the area has been covered over.

There was even an engine chassis with a tree growing through the middle of it & another chassis close by that was just lying on the ground.

Hope anyone can help?

Regards

Gaz and Malc

During WWII it was a USAAF Air Depot. Lots of material and aircraft went through there and was returned to there for work. i don't think actual missions were flown from there by the 8th AF.
There was a book about Burtonwood printed about 20 years ago. I think I have it some where in m
y collection.

A neighbor and friend of mine grew up in the area around B/U and remembers it fondly as a child.
Would talking to him help at all?
