Warbird Information Exchange

Heard alot of vague stuff about a junkyard on 206, from ex-Lakehurst gondolas to a Hawker Typhoon! Comments? I also hear most of it's gone. And yeah, I doubt a Typhoon was there too.

This was taken probably around 1975. We used to fly over it a lot, never saw anything of great aircraft interest, maybe a T-33 or F84 fuselage. Hawker Typhoon, uh, not buying it.

The photo of the yard and mention of gondola's rang a bell. I have a November 1978 newspaper article that pictures a John Mahalchak sitting in a blimp gondola in his Mt. Holly junkyard. It certainly looks like the junk yard in your photo shows several gondolas upside down in yard center........ Leon

I hear that place has been cleared out for many years now. I think that is where the NEAM got their blimp gondola. I think Weird NJ has had many mentions of the place.

NEAM's K-Ship Blimp came from Ohio, I believe right from Goodyear. Known as K-16 during the war, it was flown by Goodyear after the war as the airship "Puritan", with much of the military hardware removed. I think the one at the Naval Museum in Pensacola and Kermit Week's Blimps are from this junk yard, but not 100% sure.

I would love to hear more about this place. Being fairly local (I pass by the area every now and then) I've always wondered about it but never got the full story. I suppose everything was cleared out before my time.

I remember going past that yard in the late '60s - Yes there were airplane hulks there but I don't remember what they were. One of the distinguishing features of the place (along with the steam locomotive parked parrallel to the road) were the owners' 'signs' - Nicely hand lettered 'rants' about society and government.

The owner, John Mahalack (sp? -see name in above post) was a WWII pilot; P-51 I think.

I went past there in 1980. Met the man himself. He lived in a tin wigwam near the front gate with a pet mule! I recall seeing the gondolas...I first thought they were London buses. The billboards sure caught your attention and after looking beyond them and seeing all that stuff I made an abrupt U-turn!

Google earth shows only one junkyard on Rt206 near Mt. Holly.

No evidence of anything aircraft shaped left there.

Apparently there was once CG-4 in there too

Edit: Mahalchik's Airfield and collection was on 206 north of the salvage yard in the above post---you can't see it on modern aerials but it was literally across the road from this place * which can bee seen on google maps.
